how do ipods work

iPod is the brand of portable media players designed and marketed by Apple Inc. and launched on October 23, 2001 (2001-10-23). The product line-up includes the hard drive-based iPod Classic, the touchscreen iPod Touch, the video-capable iPod Nano, and the compact iPod Shuffle. The iPhone can function as an iPod but is generally treated as a separate product. Former iPod models include the iPod Mini and the spin-off iPod Photo (since reintegrated into the main iPod Classic line). iPod Classic models store media on an internal hard drive, while all other models use flash memory to enable their smaller size (the discontinued Mini used a Microdrive miniature hard drive). As with many other digital music players, iPods, can also serve as external data storage devices. Storage capacity varies by model.

Apple's iTunes software can be used to transfer music to the devices from computers using certain versions of Apple Macintosh and Microsoft Windows operating systems. For users who choose not to use Apple's software or whose computers cannot run iTunes software, several open source alternatives to iTunes are also available. iTunes and its alternatives may also transfer photos, videos, games, contact information, e-mail settings, Web bookmarks, and calendars to iPod models supporting those features. As of September 2008[update], more than 173,000,000 iPods had been sold worldwide, making it the best-selling digital audio player series in history.

Apple iPod: more than a music player!
The Apple iPod is not only good for music but also if you prefer it to watch movies and play games. The iPod indeed has superior memory that efficiently performs these functions. Of all the Apple iPods, the iPod Touch is the frontrunner. This amazing device can be summed up in two words: style and ease. The media player's touch screen controls, 'cover flow,' album art, EQ settings, play list management, and even screen transitions are simply beautiful.

If you are one of those smart consumers who prefer value for money, then we suggest you try online marts to procure Apple iPod. Not only will you find a great variety, you can even do a little bit of research on individual features, comparing prices and so on.

In 2001, Apple introduced the iPod, an MP3 player with the unheard-of storage capacity of 5 gigabytes. Six iPod generations later, the iPod plays songs, movies, games and photo slideshows, and you can store up to 160 GB of any type of file you want. The evolution has been a lesson in consumer electronics marketing and development: Millions of people are so hooked on the iPod, they continue to buy it and its coordinating Apple products despite quick battery death and difficult repairs.

The 2007 iPod release, the sixth-generation iPod classic, is a digital audio player, video player, photo viewer and portable hard drive, making it a full-fledged portable media center. It's available in 80-GB and 160-GB capacities and has a color LCD screen. In addition to the iPod classic, there are several other devices in the current generation of iPod players:

* iPod touch, announced in September 2007, is a touch-screen iPod with an 8-GB or 16-GB capacity. It looks a lot like an iPhone, and it uses the iPhone's multi-touch user interface. You can learn all about the technology in How the iPhone Works.
* iPod shuffle, with a 1-GB capacity, plays only songs and has no display.
* iPod nano plays digital audio, displays digital photos and comes in 4- and 8-GB capacities. It has a 2-inch display screen and a smaller form factor than the iPod video.

ipod shuffle

This is small.
iPod shuffle next to a simple key.
1.8" tall by 0.3" thin to be exact.

To create the world’s smallest music player, we moved the controls from iPod shuffle to the earbud cord. This allowed us to make the new iPod shuffle dramatically smaller, but not just for dramatically smaller’s sake. It’s also easier to use, with the controls located where you can access them quickly.

Easy-access controls.

The controls of the new iPod shuffle are located on the right earbud cord. With command central now strategically placed in this more convenient location, you can navigate your music — and activate the VoiceOver feature — without taking your eyes off your run, your ride, or whatever you’re doing.
Your music library. To go.
1000 songs.

There was a time when limited storage meant you had to leave a lot of your songs on the sync-room floor. But now that iPod shuffle has 4GB of storage, you have plenty of room to store hours and hours of music — up to 1,000 songs.* With room for multiple playlists, too.
iPod shuffle clipped.
Fashion tech-cessory.

Even the iPod shuffle clip gets the rock star treatment. Now forged in stainless steel, the clip attaches securely to your shirt, jacket, workout gear, even your backpack. And the sleek, durable anodized aluminum case — available in silver or black — makes iPod shuffle a wardrobe essential. And yes, there’s still room for personalized engraving.
This is huge.

Introducing VoiceOver.

Musically speaking, the new iPod shuffle is brilliant, thanks to an exciting new feature called VoiceOver. Say you’re listening to a song and want to know the title or the artist. With the press of a button, VoiceOver tells you as the music dips down. It even announces the names of your playlists. And when your battery needs charging, VoiceOver tells you that, too. Playlist icons.
Multiple playlists.

You’ve probably made multiple playlists in iTunes. One for your commute. One for the gym. One for just chilling out. With the new iPod shuffle, you can sync your playlists and always find the perfect mix for your activity or mood. VoiceOver tells you the name of each playlist, so it’s easy to switch between them and find the one you want without looking.
Multi-music-lingual.

A French love song. A Spanish bolero. An Italian cantata. Your music library has songs from all over the world. That’s why VoiceOver speaks 14 different languages. So it can tell you song titles and artists in the correct languages.
Shuffle. Straight. Stop.

The shuffle switch has three positions. Flip it to the left, and your music shuffles for a “whatever happens, happens” flow. Flip it to the middle, and your songs play in order. Or flip to the right to turn it off.

definition of ipod

A family of extremely popular digital media players from Apple, introduced in 2001 for the Mac and a year later for Windows. The combination of sound quality and unique click wheel user interface made the iPod one of the most successful consumer electronics products in history. More than 100 million were sold within five and a half years along with 1.5 billion songs from Apple's iTunes online store. See click wheel.
Originally for music only with a monochrome screen, color screens, photos and video were soon added, and third-party games and applications were also developed. However, in 2008, the second generation of the operating system for the iPod touch and the iPhone relaunched the devices as handheld computer.

iTunes and the AAC Audio Format
Apple's iTunes software is installed in the user's computer. It is used to organize and download content to the iPod, keep the iPod's software up-to-date and to buy new content from the online Apple store. It ensures that protected AAC audio and MPEG-4 video files purchased from the store are played on specific iPods, iPhones and computers. iPods also support unprotected MP3 and AAC files that come from ripping CDs, file sharing networks and music stores that sell unprotected files.
AAC is considered better quality than MP3 at the same recording rate, and iTunes lets users rip songs from their CDs into MP3 and AAC, both of which result in a file about 10% the size of the original song on the CD. However, for audiophiles with large capacity iPods, the Apple Lossless format maintains CD quality, but files are five times larger than highly compressed MP3 and AAC.
iPods do not play Microsoft's Windows Media Audio (WMA) format. However, numerous utilities convert WMA to MP3, and the Windows version of iTunes converts WMA to all formats that iTunes and the iPod support. See iTunes.

Batteries
Unlike other electronic devices, the rechargeable battery in the iPod is sealed and must be sent to Apple for replacement, which is free under warranty, but not thereafter. However, non-Apple sources offer replacement batteries and instructions for opening the case. See iPod compatible, iPod finger, iPod car adapter, car podding, pod slurping, MP3, AAC, FairPlay and iPhone.

File Formats
The iPod displays JPEG, GIF, BMP, TIFF and PNG images and plays MPEG-4 and H.264 video. It supports the following audio formats.

ipod games

There are some places you may find that gives you free iPod game downloads. This is wonderful and should go well with most users or rather iPod gamers. We are not talking about some rudimentary and lousy games of poor quality but interesting and intriguing games from murder mysteries to quizzes. The number of downloadable iPod media you can find online is simply amazing. The iPod is no longer a tool just for music but a perfect companion for gaming fun as well.

The first thing to do when you want to download a free Ipod game is be careful- there are HUNDREDs of websites out there that only want to rip you off. Not only that, but there are also plenty of them that want to infect your computer with viruses and damage your Ipod with their downloads. It can be pretty difficult to spot sites like this at first, so as a general rule I always avoid any site with popups.

Something else you are going to want to be careful of is breaking the law-if you do download free ipod games and they turn out to be copyrighted, you will have broken the law. The laws on download stuff get tighter all the time, and while it may be tempting because of the hi speed internet many of us have, it’s also getting easier for us to get caught.

Discover how you can find downloadable games to feed your device from some of the more popular and established sites for iPod game downloads.

ipods

IPods have been a great market hit since their appearance in 2001, almost 5 years ago. Since listening to music is one of the favorite activities of today?s individuals, the constant evolution of this device was an important request, so the new product presented a diverse range of new features, accessories and capacities. The iPod evolved from a simple and basic music player to a sum of music player.

The most important new feature of the latest generation of iPods, meaning the 5th generation, is the video. Basically, these inventive and technologically advanced, yet small devices support both MPEG-4 and H.264 videos at significantly high resolutions, which are not far from a VSH tape. Actually, in more precise terms, the H.264 codec can play video at frame rates up to 30 frames per second, video bit rates as high as 768 kilobits per second and pictures as big as 320 pixels wide by 240 pixels high. Comparing the iPod video with the TV 27 FPS or the movies 24 FPS, it is obvious that the small device it is much better.Regarding the audio qualities, comparing to a CD quality, the iPod video is superior. On the other hand, the MPEG-4 video supports a bit rate of 2,500 kilobits per second and pictures as big as 480 pixels wide by 480 pixels high, meaning three times the size of the actual screen (in comparison with the H.264 video.

From direct upload and play to mammoth storage capacities- the iPod provide many unprecedented conveniences and are extremely advanced technologically. To add to the joy, there is an iPod available for every kind of usage. You want an exercise companion? Take the iPod Shuffle. Need a high capacity travel mate? Try the latest iPod Nano. What's more, you even do not have to bother to keep a collection of CDs or MP3s for the music player at home. Just plug in your iPod Classic which is capable of storing your entire collection to it and have fun!!!!

Who invented the Ipod

The Ipod is a collection of trendy portable music players which was introduced by Apple. It
was launched on October 2001. The Ipod is an amazing discovery. It has changed the way
people think about music players. Music players are no more old big boxes which look really
ugly. The Ipod looks better than any other music player in the market. Apple has had great
success with the Ipod. The way the Ipod looks, the way it works, and the way it feels is
just amazing. But who's the mastermind behind all this? Who invented the ipod? It surely
must have taken a lot of brains to create such a masterpiece.

Who invented the Ipod?
The answer is that all other electronic appliances had very well established markets. But
nobody had tried on music players at that time. So Apple thought why not capture this
market, and they have so successfully done it.

apple ipod

The need for the first iPod resulted from Apple's recognition that that the development of digital products were moving at a fast pace for most new digital devices such as organizers, digital cameras and the like, but access to digital music remained tied to older technology based devices. Being the market led company that they are, Apple established its design and engineering teams and set them to work devising a music player to meet market demand. The very first iPod was launched upon the world in the latter months of 2001 and received a rapturous reception from an excited public. It soon established itself as a must-have, iconic product of good quality, even though some saw it as rather expensive.

The second generation was announced when in 2002, Apple released a PC version of its iPod product, so now there was one for the PC market and one for Mac users. By this clever move, Apple immediately opened up the potential market further and at the same time massively boosted sales. The strategy for development of the iPod then became clear; Apple would maintain high investment in leading edge design and engineering to continue its differentiation from would-be competitors. At the same time it would maintain its pricing model for its high end products. This appears to be quite a successful policy, given that some 150 million plus units have been sold to date.

This by now, annual announcement of the next generation brought the third generation in 2003 where all controls evolved into the touch sensitive variety, and took us on to the fourth generation in 2004. This was based on making most models in the line up smaller and had been immediately preceded by the introduction of the iPod Mini model which had introduced the clickwheel control. Shortly after this announcement, the iPod Photo was introduced , complete with color screen for displaying still photographs, but this only lasted a few months as all other models were updated to color screens.

In 2005, the continuing rollout of models saw the introduction of the simplified and cut down model without even a screen, called the iPod Shuffle. This was another Apple marketing masterpiece that was readily taken up, and indeed is now in its own third generation of development. Other introductions included the iPod Nano, which was tiny but did have a screen.

Later in the year, true to form, Apple announced the fifth generation of the iPod concept. By now we were looking at a video version of the whole iPod range, that could now play movies and video games, together with updated versions of the iPod Shuffle and iPod Nano.

By January 2007, Apple was ready to announce its move into the cell phone world with the launch of its iPhone, which was not strictly part of the iPod range and in September 2007 a complete revamp of the iPod range of models was announced. This was officially described as the sixth generation launch although by now it was out of annual sequence. The main excitement was caused by the introduction of the iPod Touch, which was actually the iPhone without the phone or camera facilities. The revamp was something of a rationalization for the range, which is now based on the iPod Shuffle, iPod Nano, the original iPod Classic and the iPod Touch, complemented by the all singing, all dancing iPhone.

During 2008, there have been further improvements in the specifications of the iPhone and iPod Touch and no doubt changes to other models are in the pipeline. It is clear then, that Apple's commitment to ongoing and exciting design and engineering development is set to continue into the foreseeable future.By: Wendy Gorman

what does ipod stand for

iPod is a brand of portable digital media player designed and marketed by Apple Computer. Devices in the iPod family provide a simple user interface designed around a central scroll wheel (barring the iPod shuffle). Most iPod models store media on a built-in hard drive, while the smaller iPod shuffle and iPod nano use flash memory. Like most digital audio players, an iPod can serve as an external data storage device when connected to a computer. Discontinued versions of the iPod include two generations of the popular iPod mini and four generations of the full-sized iPod, all of which had monochrome screens except for the fourth-generation iPod with color screen (previously sold as iPod photo before it replaced the monochrome iPod in the top line). As of December 2005, the lineup consists of the fifth-generation iPod which can play videos, the iPod nano which has a color screen, and the iPod shuffle; all three iterations were released in 2005. The iPod is currently the world's best-selling digital audio player.

how does an ipod work

The Apple iPod is usually categorized as a portable music device that among other things
play music files such as MP3's. MP3's are digital files that can be played on most computers
today. Music is not saved in analog form; instead it is saved in digital form, to be more
precise, saved in long streams of 0's and 1's. MP3's are just music that has been changed
into a digital format (0's and 1s) and stored on a hard drive or flash memory unit or in the
case of the iPod a miniature digital hard drive. It should be noted that besides the ability
to play MP3's, most iPod's can play AAC, WAV, AIFF, Apple Lossless and Audible 2, 3 and 4
formats.
If you are familiar with a music CD, a normal audio CD holds only 80 minutes of music (about
800 megabytes of data), so how does the Apple iPod fit hours upon hours of music in such a
small amount of space? The answer is compression.
The Apple iPod can fit many hours of music on one small device because it uses codecs that
compress MP3's or other compatible types of digital music formats. Codecs stand for
compression decompression algorithms and are formulas that allow you to shrink the size of
large files into very small and manageable files. The Apple iPod has a digital audio chip
(DAC) that is able to read these shrunken files and create high quality audio files which
are transmitted to the ear phones.

Putting a Song on iTunes
You have many sources for music files. You can either have some existing MP3 songs on your
PC or you can rip songs from CDs. And of course, you can always buy individual songs and
albums from the iTunes music store. The key thing is to load all of your songs to iTunes so
you can transfer them to your iPod when you want to.
To load the songs from your CD to iTunes, get your CD and make sure you have an internet
connection. Insert your CD and open iTunes. Now all you have to do is click the import
button and wait for it to finish.
For MP3 songs, all you have to do is open the folder where these songs are located and then
drag the specific songs you want to add to an open iTunes window. You will know when a song
has been successfully added when it is indicated by a plus sign.

Loading Your Songs to Your iPod
While iTunes is still open, connect your iPod to your computer through USB. Then find the
sync iPod button from the file menu. Click that button and the songs that you have on your
iTunes will be loaded to your iPod. Just a bit of caution though, do not click other buttons
on iTunes especially on the first sync. Doing so may just create problems for you later on.
You might also want to change the settings as to what to sync with your iPod especially when
you have data other than songs on iTunes.
Remember that you should practice using the click wheel so you can navigate your iPod with
much ease. For navigating songs on your playlist, it's usually clicking it to the right to
move to the next song and left to the previous song. If you want to rewind the current song,
all you have to do is press and hold that click wheel to the left and to right if you want
to forward it.

ipod nano

Apple, Inc. previously launched the newest addition in the group iPods, which is the Pink
8GB iPod Nano. Coming in 9 cool colors, this iPod Nano mixes practicality and entertainment
in one. Similar to other iPods, the pink Nano enables users to obtain and store music and
podcast from iTunes. Moreover, it can hold tons of TV shows and movies, so that you can
watch them wherever you go and any time you please. You can even store all your cool photos
in your pink Nano, transforming it into a digital, portable photo album!

The main features: Like all other iPods, the Nano is primarily designed to play digitized
music such as mp3 files. And like its relatives, the Nano excels when doing what it does
best. According to my research, the Nano uses the same sound chip as the Mini, and as
mentioned before, overall quality is excellent. The included earbuds do a decent job
delivering the sound, though I would prefer higher-end headphones to take full advantage of
the audio experience. Fiddling with the included equalizer settings also seems to make
noticeable sound adjustments, so fickle sound connoisseurs may have something to smile at
here.

The iPod nano operates with iTunes on Mac OS X or Microsoft Windows (third-party software is
obtainable for platforms, which Apple does not support). It connects through the same
proprietary wharf connector as any other third-generation iPod, the fourth-generation iPod,
and the iPod mini, uses a USB 2.0 port on the user's computer. Although it uses the similar
connection as Apple's FireWire iPod Cable and could charge its battery over FireWire, the
iPod nano does not bear coordinating over a FireWire connection. The iPod nano comprises a
stop watch and a numerous time zone clock function. There is also a mixture lock feature,
which makes use of the click wheel to lock the iPod, and serve up to secure the user's
calendar and other contact information. It was also the first iPod to comprise a new lyrics
screen, modifiable using iTunes.

Included items:
- USB 2.0 cable (backwards compatible with USB 1.1). This connects via the dock
connector underneath the Nano. NOTE: Don't confuse the dock connector with the
dock itself. The iPod Nano dock is an accessory that costs an extra $29. Over USB 2.0,
the Nano transfers music at about 5 mb per second.

- iTunes software (Mac & PC)

- Earbud headpones: They're white, (even for the black iPod Nano).

christmas theme ipod

Starting a Christmas scrapbooking album will create lasting precious memories for many years to come, and provide a wonderful annual holiday craft tradition among children and families.
Interested in starting a family scrapbook for Christmas, but have no idea how or where to start? Well, you’ve come to the right article, and "x" really does mark the spot for information about Christmas scrapbooking ideas designed to save you time toil, trouble and money. Read on and get inspired.

It may take time to establish the exact theme desired, but this is one of those steps that the entire Christmas scrapbooking operation hinges upon. It will determine your content, direction and outcome. So pick carefully and thoughtfully, for the Christmas scrapbooking idea that you save may well be your own. Changing themes for your Christmas scrapbooking has the same result as what Abraham Lincoln said about "changing horses in mid-stream."

Remember that anything goes, and the world is your source of material for your Christmas scrapbooking. Consider all kinds of paper ephemera; namely, cards, newspaper clippings, letters, lists of all kinds, tickets to shows, cartoons and any other physical artifacts from the life of the subject or subjects of your Christmas scrapbooking. Consider stuffing it all into a big basket until you can sort through it all and refine your selection.Photos
are the heart of most scrapbooks and different showcasing techniques can render unique holiday flair to your Christmas scrapbooking. Some thoughts along these lines might include: old fashioned photo corners, matting shots against Christmas scrapbooking colors to set the images off from the white paper and silhouetting photos (cutting them out of their backgrounds). This last technique works best with full-bodied images.

Be guided only by your imagination. Things may turn out differently than originally planned, but that only proves that art really does imitate life. Most important, have fun while working on your Christmas scrapbooking project. You are sure to look back on it with love and pride as you pass this new family heirloom on to future generations. That’s a true Christmas legacy and a gift that will withstand the test of time!

ipod touch games

iPod games is focused on bringing you the latest news and reviews on games for iPod, ipod touch and of course, the iPhone!
We have reviewed all the existing iPod games from apple and to save you sorting through hundreds of rather dull iPhone games we have also selected our own top ten iPhone games based purely on what we think should be there!
In addition we will also be reviewing anything else we come across in the world of iPods and iPhones that bucks the trend of the obvious.

Everybody must at some site have played Pacman and you can now you can even play Pacman Lite on your Ipod. It looks like the original arcade version, complete with a virtual control stick for you to toggle. No wonder it looks so retro, it is made by Namco. Check it out for some classic gaming action! Available for both iPod Touch and iPhone.
Playing Jelly Car you drive a car. You guessed it, made of jelly, through a world of jelly or at least try to. The shocking bad graphics, which look like something a 5 year old designed are actually more quiet pleasing than annoying and for me make the game. Available for both iPod Touch and iPhone.

Tap Tap Revenge is a sort of low budget version of Guitar Hero. Tap through the beats of more than 40 free songs and donýt be surprised when you get addicted to this game. Available for both iPod Touch and iPhone.

Ibowl is one of my favourites! Go bowling with your iPod Touch with great graphics. If you like bowling this game allows you to bowl at anytime and anyplace, and you don't even need to hire smelly footwear. Available for both iPod Touch and iPhone.

Cannon Challenge is developed by the Discovery Channel and to be honest is not one of my favourites. The game consists of shooting cannons at targets and try to hit them. It's more fun than it sounds, but only just.. Available for both iPod Touch and iPhone.

Labyrinth Lite Edition. In this game you have to roll a little metal ball through a wooden labyrinth while avoiding holes. This game is very addictive and very tricky and will keep you amused for ages trying to master the 10 levels. Available for both iPod Touch and iPhone.

All these games are available 100% free from the Itunes store so simply load the itunes store and type in the game you want to load. Now a word of warning! Donýt download these games from other sites or you could damage your Ipod or even get it infected by a virus or Trojan. So play safe, download from Itunes and have fun!
